Laws of the Black Furies

Suffer no Abuse to Woman

Women are, on average, not as physically strong as men. This means that they sometimes need protection. I hardly need to tell you who should provide it.

Remember Your Parents

Unless I missed a major theological event, there haven't been any immaculate conceptions recently. That means you were born of a man and a woman. No matter your personal feelings on men, they are and always have been half of the equation. A man is not evil simply by dint of his sex; to believe so is no better than calling women "the weaker sex."

Train the Weak; Protect the Helpless

You do remember the difference, don't you? Weak people produce more weak people, and since humans have virtually no method of natural selection, it is up to us to try to correct their weaknesses as best we can.

Keep the Wyld Places Pure

This has both symbolic and literal meaning. Some Furies take this to mean "protect your sexuality": That is, don't give it away cheaply. Others believe it to be a simple reminder to guard caerns and other such holy places. I think it means both, and more besides; women carry many secrets and our connection to the Mother is something a man might guess at, but never feel. I believe this tenet is a reminder to revel in what it is to be a woman.

The Litany

Garou Shall Not Mate With Garou

The Law: Werewolves should mate only with humans or wolves. The offspring of two Garou, the Metis, are born sterile and defective, physically deformed or even insane. In the worst cases, the mother dies giving birth to her Crinos form cub. These births are obviously cursed, and introducing even the hint of corruption into the Garou race is a crime against Gaia. Werewolves may fall in love - and they often do in the ballads sung by the Galliards - but even the clutches of passion are no excuse for this transgression.

The Tribe: You know, everyone has these impure thoughts once in awhile. And, while some of your sisters might suggest that you confess your urge to a sept elder, knowing full well that that elder is gonna tear you a new one so big you'll never think those thoughts again, there is another way around this whole issue. Of course, taking pleasure with another woman isn't for everyone.

Combat the Wyrm Wherever It Dwells and Whenever It Breeds

The Law: The Wyrm and its minions are an obvious threat to humanity and to Gaia. Destroying that threat is the Garou's very reason for existence. The quickest way to power and respect among werewolves, and the quickest way to stall the coming Apocalypse, is to battle against the Wyrm.

The Tribe: Hah! If all we had to worry about was the Wyrm, this battle would be over in short order. The truth of the matter is, blaming all evils in the world on the Wyrm simply gives us an excuse not to take any responsibility for the problems facing us. All we have to do is yell "Wyrm!" and we'll be absolved from any and all responsibility. Now, I'm not saying you should pass up an obvious target when the Wyrm offers it, but don't get so caught up in combatting the Wyrm that you lose sight of all the other injustices we're called upon to battle.

Respect the Territory of Another

The Law: The traditional Howl of Introduction is required whenever a werewolf approaches another's territory. The holder of the territory may even require additional information before gaining acceptance; Silver Fangs, for example, insist on establishing a visitor's degree of pure blood. To properly warn potential interlopers, Garou mark their territory with scent and scratched sigils.

The Tribe: You know, some Garou are of the opinion that it's just "polite and proper" to announce one's presence and intentions when entering the territory of another, and I'm not here to deny it. What I am here to do is let you know that there are some cases where it's more than just protocol, it's a life saving mechanism. You don't believe me? Walk onto a Red Talon Caern sometime without announcing yourself properly beforehand and see if there's enough of you left to walk out.

Accept an Honorable Surrender

The Law: Matters of leadership and honor are often settled by single combat. While this is a proper way to solve such problems, it is important that the combatants not die needless deaths - ever warrior is needed. The loser of a duel loses no Renown for showing his throat in surrender to end a fight, and the winner is respected for his restraint.

The Tribe: Honorable surrenders are all well and good, in the right circumstance. Hopefully, however, you'll be smart enough never to be in a situation in which your throat needs to be bared. Sure, at some point in your life, someone's gonna piss you off beyond your breaking point, and you're gonna throw down. Just remember, combat isn't the only choice you have in a challenge. In fact, combat should be used as a last resort, and even then you should convince the Master of Challenge to declare that the challenge lasts until first blood. Always go for non-lethal challenges first, there's no reason for Gaia to lose two warriors.

Submission to Those of Higher Station

The Law: Every leader must have followers. Rank and Renown ease relations within Garou society by outlining everyone's place, with minimal fighting involved. Reasonable requests from higher-ranking Garou are expected to be obeyed.

The Tribe: If you ever need to start an argument among the tribe as a diversion, this is a great place to start. You're not going to find many Furies willing to submit to anyone, including the so-called highest in station; especially if that Garou is male. Following a good leader and obeying battle commands are fine, but you start letting someone tell you how to act, when to act, and why to act that way, and you're just asking for trouble. And if you ever see another Garou trying to dominate one of your sisters, regardless of her tribe, don't you dare turn your back on her; we all know where that's gonna lead.

The First Share of the Kill for the Greatest in Station

The Law: The alpha feeds first from the kill. In Garou society, this law of the wild has expanded to include trophies taken from fallen enemies. Garou of greater renown are entitled to demand a greater share of the spoils.

The Tribe: Oh great, just what we needed, another subject for the men to have a pissing match over. Like we give a rat's ass what rank you are! If you put in more effort than I do in a successful hunt, regardless of your rank, you're getting your choice of the spoils before I get mine. Unfortunately, not all of us see it this way.

Ye Shall Not Eat the Flesh of Humans

The Law: During the years of the Impergium, this practice was not unusual. Since the agreement of the Concort, the eating of human flesh has been banned as a violation of the oath to protect humanity. Even worse, this act of near-cannibalism is an invitation to corruption by the Wyrm.

The Tribe: You wanna watch this one if you're homid born. You frenzy too far and you might end up chowing on human whether you wanted to or not, and they say it's addictive. Though, why you would ever want to eat human is beyond me, their flesh is contaminated by all of the chemicals they consume. Besides, we're still paying off Impergium debts, let's not add to them.

Resepct for Those Beneath Ye: All Are of Gaia

The Law: Out of respect for Gaia, who created the Garou to protect and in essence serve Her creation, werewolves are expected to treat every creature with the respect due its place in the natural order. Chivalry is a lofty ideal, and appropriate behavior worthy of Renown.

The Tribe: There are two ways to look at this one. First, you can accept the fact that everything in creation has a place. Lupus know this, they know that their prey is there to be eaten, and they respect that. Second, you can see it as a reminder to be kind and sympathetic to your lessers. You can tell Garou that hold this observation by the way they nod blandly while listening to a younger Garou explain something.

The Veil Shall Not Be Lifted

The Law and the Reality: The Garou take this tenet of the Litany very seriously. Much more is at stake than respect for the ages-old pact of the Concord: in a world full of corrupt corporations, religious zealots, vampires and other threats, the Garou must walk carefully or bring down the wrath of countless enemies on their own heads.

The Tribe: You want to destroy your sept and get yourself killed? Go ahead, rend the Veil, use the Delirium as cover. Just remember, the Delirium has different effects on everyone, and Crinos is the only form that inflicts it. You can change from Lupus to Homid and back as much as you want, nobody's gonna forget anything. Besides, while some humans might forget you, others may go insane for the rest of their lives, and others still might not even be effected. If you absolutely, positively must be seen in Crinos, don't leave any witnesses alive to talk about it.

Do Not Suffer Thy People to Tend Thy Sickness

The Law: A dignified death is a private death. This is the way of wild creatures who are mortally injured or simply too old. It preserves the resources of the group for those who can best benefit from them, rather than wasting them to extend a lost life.

The Tribe: Old age... like that's a major problem among Garou. No, mainly this refers to those of us who get wounded beyond hope or poisoned. Our tribal healers will do everything in their power to bring a sister back from the edge of death. But sometimes, you just have to let go.

The Leader May Be Challenged at Any Time During Peace

The Law: For the good of the pack, a weak alpha must not be allowed to remain in control. If no danger immediately threatens, any Garou of sufficient rank may challenge the leader for her position. A staredown, duel or gamecraft challenge results, and the alpha must cede her authority if she loses. Inappropriate or frivolous challenges - for example, a cub challenging the sept leader - may be rebuffed with no loss of Renown.

The Tribe: So let me get this straight. Sometime during these endtimes, we're going to be at peace? In that case, would you mind letting us know who the members of the Inner Calyx are and where they meet, so we can challenge them?

The Leader May Not Be Challenged During Wartime

The Law: The strength of the Garou is the pack. Pack tactics are necessary to bring down the great monsters or hordes of smaller spawn that werewolves may encounter; even one pack member's lapse in obedience may have dire consequences for the rest of his pack.

The Tribe: I'll make this one simple for you. During a battle, you don't question the alpha. If you do, you're going to lose Renown at the very least and quite possibly your life.

Ye Shall Take No Action That Causes a Caern to Be Violated

The Law and the Reality: This tenet is even more strictly enforced than the protectio nof the Veil. Caerns are sacred sites, and to cause the desecration of such a holy place with or without inent to harm is a crime worthy of the severest punishment.

The Tribe: This point of the Litany is not open for discussion or re-interpretation. Period.
